Do you have an upcoming dental implant surgery? You are probably excited about the prospect of replacing your lost teeth and regaining a complete and confident smile. Of course, it is understandable if you are also a bit apprehensive. After all, any type of surgery feels like a huge undertaking! How can you prepare for the big day and attend your appointment with confidence that things will go smoothly? This blog post offers helpful tips.

Communicate with Your Dentist

While general information that you find online can be helpful, nothing replaces personalized guidance from your dental team. During any of your preliminary appointments, or during a phone call, feel free to ask questions about your procedure. You can inquire about details regarding the surgery itself, what to expect afterward, and more. Make a list of questions so you do not forget to bring up anything important during your conversation.

Stock Up on Soft Foods

A trip to the grocery store can help you prepare for your post-op period. You will be required to consume a no-chew diet temporarily, so buy things like protein drinks, ingredients for smoothies, applesauce, and anything else that requires no chewing. You can even enjoy some ice cream! As you heal, you will be able to transition to soft foods, like scrambled eggs and meatloaf, so you may want to buy ingredients for those meals as well.

Arrange for Support

Adequate rest is important for a smooth recovery. Even though you may be able to go back to work within a few days, you still need to be careful not to overexert yourself. Therefore, it is a good idea to ask friends or family members to help with some of your usual responsibilities, whether that involves cooking, cleaning, walking the dog, caring for children, etc.

Take Medications as Directed

You might be required to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before your surgery. Or, you might have to start certain medications. Strictly adhere to whatever instructions your dentist provides so you can prevent infections, avoid complications, and lower the risk of dangerous medication interactions.

Keep Yourself Comfortable

On the morning of your surgery, enjoy a filling and nutritious breakfast (if your dentist allows — some patients are required to fast). Wear an outfit made of soft, comfortable fabrics that will not make you feel restricted. You can also set up your recovery area. Wherever you plan to rest after your surgery, make sure you have easy access to things like a phone charger, water, pain relievers, and a nice pillow.

Dental implant surgery is a surprisingly easy experience for most people. Prepare well so your big day and your recovery period cause as little stress as possible.
