What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small posts made from biocompatible materials like titanium that are surgically placed beneath the gumline directly into a patient’s jaw. They fuse with the bone tissue to form a permanent bond, and from there, a dental restoration can be attached on top to replace the lost teeth. The restoration gains support from the underlying posts, which also stimulate the jaw and act just like your natural tooth roots.

The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – We’ll need to make sure your mouth is healthy enough for dental implants and that you have enough remaining jawbone tissue to support them.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – After your mouth is numbed, the implant(s) will be placed at precise angles and locations beneath the gumline.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Dental implants require several months to fuse with the jawbone; this process is called osseointegration. After this has occurred, you’ll return to receive your abutment(s), which are small connector pieces that are placed on top of the implant posts.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – After everything has healed, you’ll be ready to receive your custom-made dental restoration, which is attached to your abutments and receives full support from the underlying posts.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just replace missing teeth—they offer patients numerous quality-of-life benefits, including:

  • They’re the only form of tooth replacement that stimulates the jawbone and prevents bone loss.
  • Since they restore most of your original bite force, virtually all foods are easy to eat.
  • They don’t require any specialized cleaning products or maintenance, unlike dentures.
  • With proper care, they have the potential to last for decades or even a lifetime.
